Make Disability Visible

The figurative cancer card will be yours for as long as you need it. If you struggle to explain how you feel, the words ‘I have cancer’ make people a lot more empathetic.

That being said, it’s amazing what a difference a visual marker makes.

Take a walking stick.

In my days of anaemia, I used a stick to get around. It provided a convenient aid on which to rest. With the stick, I no longer needed to explain anything. If I asked for help, I didn’t need lengthy health explanations. People labelled me as ‘disabled’ and took me on face value. Those sneaky stereotypes strike, often so depressing, but at times, quite useful.
